The Ministry of Agriculture through Proamazonia today launched the National Plan for the Promotion of Caña Brava (Samoa Fiber): Peru 2008-2020, which will develop Plan 560000 hectares, generating direct employment to 160 thousand farmers with a total investment of U.S. $ 125 million.
That plan envisages the development of 60 thousand hectares of Samoa Fiber with an investment of U.S. $ 53 million.
It is worth mentioning that on January 25 this year, the Executive issued Supreme Decree No. 004-2008-AG, through which declares national interest the installation of Samoa fiber plantations.
In the case of the Samoa Fiber, with the aim of contributing to the work of prevention, aiming to avoid possible flooding caused by the rising water levels, especially the rivers of the Amazon.
There are about 20 thousand farmers involved in its development, existing in the departments of Loreto, Ucayali, San Martin and Amazonas, an area of 15 million hectares covering diverse ecosystems that are related to flooded areas , Of which 47% (7 050 000 ha) is composed of flood plains suitable for installation of Samoa Fiber plantations.
It should be specified that the wild cane does not register any export to any country because its use is entirely local, for the manufacture of mats, rural construction of low-cost housing, tourism and handicrafts environments.
